7 Day Outback Discovery: Sydney to Cameron Corner & Broken Hill via Bourke and Lake CargelligoConnect to Country, Culture and Self in this Sacred Outback Journey
Join us for an immersive exploration through the diverse heartlands of outback NSW. Journey through dramatic landscapes, ancient Aboriginal sites, and remote townships, all in the comfort of a small group, professionally guided Land Cruiser expedition.
Day 1 — SYDNEY, MUDGEE, GULGONG, COONABARABRAN
Depart Sydney via Bells Line of Road, with sweeping views over the Grose Valley from Mount Tomah. A brief stop at the historic Zig Zag Railway, before journeying through Lithgow to Mudgee for wine tasting and lunch in the vineyard surrounds.
Explore Poet’s Corner and step back in time at Gulgong, a gold rush gem immortalised on the old $10 note. Continue via the creative murals of Mendooran to Coonabarabran at the foothills of the Warrumbungles. Overnight Coonabarabran. Meals: LD
Day 2 — WARRUMBUNGLE NATIONAL PARK, MACQUARIE MARSHES, BOURKE
Begin the day with a walk in Warrumbungle National Park, enjoying panoramic views of the Breadknife from near Camp Blackman or a bird-rich walk through Burbie Canyon. Visit Siding Springs Observatory, home to Australia’s largest optical telescope.
Travel west via silo art in Coonamble to the Macquarie Marshes, one of the most vital wetland ecosystems in the Southern Hemisphere. Explore local wildlife and learn about the Marshes' cultural and ecological importance. Continue to Bourke. Overnight Bourke. Meals: BLD
Day 3 — BOURKE, JANDRA CRUISE on DARLING RIVER, TIBOOBURRA
Cruise the Darling River aboard the Jandra Paddleboat, echoing the legacy of paddle steamers in the region. Visit the Back O’Bourke Centre, showcasing stories of pioneers, poets and the powerful women of the west. Walk a local Aboriginal cultural trail, then explore Gundabooka National Park, with time to view sacred Aboriginal rock art and sandstone ranges.
We then head due west for Tibooburra via Wanaaring crossing the recently flooded Paroo River, and via Nocoleche Nature Reserve to Overnight Tibooburra Meals: BLD
Day 4 — TIBOOBURRA TO CAMERON CORNER, MILPARINKA, BROKEN HILL
Today we are heading into the Sturt Desert & Sturt National park, crossing the Grey Range with a stop at Fort Grey.
The park protects an enormous arid landscape of space and solitude. The
rolling red sand dunes of the Strzelecki desert ripple through the
western section, graduating past surprising wetlands surrounded by white
sands. After some great opportunities for photos, we pass through the Dog Fence and arrive at Cameron Corner on
the 3 states corner (NSW, SA & QLD) for a thirst quencher and
souvenirs, and check out the "Corner Store"
Leave Cameron Corner and journey south again via Tibooburra, a town rich in gold rush history and the remote charm of the Sturt Desert. Discover the heritage sandstone buildings and desert sculptures. We visit the Milparinka cultural precinct and learn of Captain Sturts challenging expedition to disciover the "Inland Sea" Arrive in Broken Hill, the “Silver City”, and toast the journey with a view from the Line of Lode Miners Memorial. Overnight Broken Hill. Meals: BLD
Day 6 — BROKEN HILL TO LAKE CARGELLIGO VIA MENINDEE LAKES & BURKE AND WILLS CAMPSITE
Depart Broken Hill and travel to Menindee Lakes, check out the prolific bird life and the Darling River Weir. with a stop at the historic Burke & Wills Camp by the lakeshore. On through Menindee, we follow old stock routes through remote western NSW. Arrive at Lake Cargelligo, a tranquil outback oasis. Overnight Lake Cargelligo. Meals: BLD
Day 7 — PARKES RADIO TELESCOPE, RETURN TO SYDNEY
Our final day takes us through Parkes for a stop at the iconic Parkes Radio Telescope – the “Dish” that played a vital role in the Apollo moon landing. Enjoy one last connection to the cosmos before the journey completes in Sydney. Also in Parkes is the Elvis Presley museum and annual celebration of "The Kings" birthday
Tour concludes late afternoon in Sydney. Meals: BL
